Woodland Tales, adapted for the stage by Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble
Grades Pre-K to 3
How did the turkey get its gobble? Why are the rabbit's ears so long? How did the frog lose his teeth? For hundreds of years, Native American children have delighted in stories of how animals came to be as they are. Like Kipling's Just So stories, the Native American legends in Woodland Tales combine humor and wisdom to enchant the youngest among us. Actors and audience sit together in the round sharing the stories much as they would have around a camp fire hundreds of years ago. The lively storytelling in an intimate setting and audience participation make this an excellent first-time theater experience.
The performance was made possible from the generous supporters of Sunset School PTA. Thank you!
A Thousand Cranes, by Kathryn Schultz Miller, produced by special arrangement with DRAMATIC PUBLISHING, Woodstock, IL
For grades 4-8
There is a legend that says that any person who folds 1000 paper cranes will be granted a wish. When Sadako Sasaki was just 2 years old, her mother held her in her arms and sang a lullaby as her grandmother was making tea. Suddenly, a flash of light cut across the sky. 10 years later in 1955, when Sadako was a happy 12-year old school girl in Hiroshima, radiation sickness came. Sadako began to fold cranes, wishing to be well again, and wishing that an atom bomb like the one that took her grandmother would never be dropped again. Before her death, Sadako folded 644 cranes. Her friends and classmates folded 356 more to make 1000. 3 years later, inHiroshima Peace Park, a statue of Sadako holding a golden crane in her outstretched arms unveiled. On it is this inscription: "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world." Every year since then, children have sent thousands of cranes to be placed at the foot of Sadako's monument. The play tells the inspiring true story of Sadako and of how her spirit of hope and strength continues to touch young people the world over to work for peace.
This wonderful program was made possible from the generous supporters of Sunset School PTA. Thank you!
What is Founders Day? Founders Day, February 17th commemorates the first convention of the National Congress of Mothers, held February 17-19, 1897 in Washington DC. Each February, PTAs nationwide pay special tribute to Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst, co-founders of the National Congress of Mothers, eventually called the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, or PTA. We also remember Selena Sloan Butler, who in 1926 founded the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, which united with the National PTA in 1970.
In 1910 Mrs. David O. Mears, one of the original members of the Congress suggested that Founders Day should always be observed as a significant anniversary by the National Congress – and everyone concerned with the needs of children and youth. Each year since then PTA members have honored the Founders. Through the Founders Day gift, they have helped ensure ever stronger and more effective local, state, and national parent-teacher action for children.
